Curator statement:
Each of the works in this show, each in its own way, contains curative properties; some by means of well crafted forms, others by their methods and all by their use of color. Can pictures heal? Recent studies suggest yes, that there is a direct link between the content of images and the brain’s reaction to pain, stress, and anxiety. Harmonious colors enliven and make us happy, heighten our optimism and energize us: soft and soothing tints, calm us and encourage contemplation. Repetition, across the page surface, reassures us makes us feel balanced. While much art today aims to engage our attention in confrontation ways, these artists work steadily ahead, forging an island built on Matisse’s ideal: luxe calme et volupté.
